Simple Model of Learning and Collective Decision Making during Nectar Source Selection by Honey Bees

چکیده
Swarm Robotics is an area of active research interest where groups of robots coordinate and perform collective tasks. Existing approaches to Learning and Collective Decision Making amongst a group of robots is complex. In this paper, we propose a simple model of learning and collective decision making in honey bees engaged in foraging for suitable nectar-sites. Our simple model takes into consideration discrete numbers of bees and considers affects of noise and randomness. We achieve this by using an algorithm for exact stochastic simulation used in physical chemistry. Using this model, we wish to understand the autonomous learning and collective decision making process that a swarm of robots might employ.

Collective Decision-Making in Honey Bee Foraging Dynamics
We consider a bee colony as dynamical system gathering information from an environment and adjusting its behaviour in accordance to it. Intelligent decisionmaking emerges from enhancing the level of communication among the individuals. Since the foragers communicate information about the environment to the nest, the latter means enhancing the coupling level of colony and environment. When indiv...
متن کاملImidacloprid Alters Foraging and Decreases Bee Avoidance of Predators
Concern is growing over the effects of neonicotinoid pesticides, which can impair honey bee cognition. We provide the first demonstration that sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid can harm honey bee decision-making about danger by significantly increasing the probability of a bee visiting a dangerous food source. Apis cerana is a native bee that is an important pollinator of agricultural cr...
متن کاملLearning and Foraging in Robot-bees
Honey-bees have long served as a model organism for investigating insect navigation and collective behavior: they exhibit division of labor and are an example of insect societies where direct communication between workers enable cooperation in the task of collecting nectar and pollen for the colony. However, honey-bees seem to learn about their environment progressively before becoming foragers...
متن کاملCollective control of the timing and type of comb construction by honey bees (Apis mellifera)
This review considers how a honey bee colony optimally controls the timing and type of new comb construction. Optimal timing requires bees to balance the energy costs of construction with the opportunity costs of lacking storage space during nectar flows. They do so by conditioning the start of building on (1) the attainment of a fullness threshold, and (2) the availability of nectar. A dynamic...
متن کاملHoney Bee Location- and Time-Linked Memory Use in Novel Foraging Situations: Floral Color Dependency
Learning facilitates behavioral plasticity, leading to higher success rates when foraging. However, memory is of decreasing value with changes brought about by moving to novel resource locations or activity at different times of the day. These premises suggest a foraging model with location- and time-linked memory. Thus, each problem is novel, and selection should favor a maximum likelihood app...
